secure external authentication?

hi,

        i'm running squid 1.1.20 with the proxy authentication patch; i'm
using a program that takes a kerberos principal and password. however,
having these transmitted across the network in a non-secure fashion
defeats the purpose of using kerberos. any thoughts on how to pass a
username/password authentication request securely? thanks.
