Squid will close the helper process connection on any read/write errors
to it, which explains the message about the helper exiting.

I have no clue on the read timeout, there should never be read timeouts
from helpers. My guess is that your hosts implementation of TCP
keep-alives fails on loopback connections, and erronously causes
connections to time out.
