OK, so the first post was a simple permission problem - I fixed it.

but I am now getting a new message in /var/log/messages when I try to
start squid from rc2.d

Mar 13 11:03:19 daddylongleg squid[238]: Too many queued dnsserver
requests

Does anybody have any ideas?
